What is Glaucoma ?
It is a disease that affects the optic nerve, which is the part of the eye that carries the images we see to the brain. The optic nerve is made up of many nerve fibers, like an electric cable containing numerous wires.
When the pressure inside the eye grows, some fibers may be damaged optic nerve, causing blind spots. These blind spots usually go undetected until the optic nerve damage will be significant. If the optic nerve destruction is complete, it causes blindness.
The risk factor is related and known elevated intraocular pressure. When diagnosed treatment should be started without a rush, or medical (with hypotensive topical or eye drops), or laser (different forms depending on the case) or surgical. Depending on the type of glaucoma, developmental stage of diagnosis, patient age, and other aspects to consider, we will choose one mode or another.
Surgery for Glaucoma
Generally it is decided to chose to surgery when not responding to treatment with eye drops or an intolerance to them; by the other hand, the laser cannot be implemented or not be enough with it, and sometimes it is because they are in a very advanced stage where surgery can provide a more stable blood pressure control preventing hypertensive peaks.
The technique most commonly used is the trabeculectomy. It is about a surgery called “filter”, because what matters is to create fistula drainage or allow to release of intraocular fluid or aqueous smoke without bounders into the subconjunctival space. There are now other techniques such as deep sclerectomy and valve implantation, reserved for cases where the former is discouraged.
The intraocular pressure stabilizes surgery in most patients, and consequently prevents the progressive loss of vision. Also a large percentage of our patients can let treatment go with eye drops to increase their quality of life.
